I was able to predict what was going to happen well before it did, but the story still worked for me. I think it was well worth my leisure time spent reading it. Book number 18 in Simon Scarrow 's long-running Macro and Cato series, which means he's catching up on Bernard Cornwell Sharpe for sheer proliferation of books with the same central character s and that's a good thing.

I have to say, with a title like 'Traitors of Rome' and with the extremely mercenary historical nature of the Praetorian Guard, I first thought - when I saw the title - that the Traitors of Rome would themselves prove to be the Praetorians themselves! That's not the case, however, read the novel to finds out what is Sep 27, GBL rated it it was amazing.

In this, the 18th novel in the series, we have two stories for the price of one as Cato and Macro are separated for a major part of the novel as they take different paths; Cato on an embassy to the Parthian capital Ctesiphon and Macro on an expedition to put down a rebellion in the city of Thapsis. Scarrow is a brilliant writer of Another classic Roman historical novel from the pen of Simon Scarrow, as Tribune Cato and Centurion Macro are involved in the preparations for the invasion of Parthia.
Scarrow is a brilliant writer of the Roman period and he is comfortable in the relationship he has built up between Macro and Cato, whose friendship is a key element of the novels.
Scarrow is a master of creating believable dangerous situations and then creating solutions to save the situation, but he is always keen to show the reality of battle and its impact on the men involved. Jun 29, Robd rated it really liked it. Sent by the Commander of the eastern Empire, Cato enters enemy territory with a small unit of men, and is tasked with trying to avert the forthcoming war by an assembly to King Vologases. His party is joined by Apollonius, an agent of the Commander.
Not all is at it seems, with much deceit and double crossings peppering the story as they journey deep into Parthian lands. Just who can be trusted? Whilst maintaining a siege at Thapsis, and facing supply problems and yet more deceit and subterfuge, Macro is challenged to push himself to the very limit. More exciting Roman historical fiction from a great writer, bringing life to the Roman army and Empire. Another page turner of action, plots and treachery.
Really enjoyable. Rob D By now everyone knows the formula of these books and this remains truthful to it. The only point that might distinguish it from others is that Macro and Cato have separate narrative for most of the book, but everything else has already been done before.
With such a longevity of this saga, it's understandable that it becomes hard to innovate from one book to another, however there's nothing here that might distinguish it from the others: know characters, know scenario, know battle tactics. Even tho By now everyone knows the formula of these books and this remains truthful to it.
Even though all I've said before, it still remains an enjoyable book that allows to spend some relaxing minutes and fans of Macro and Cato will still appreciate it Feb 21, Jorge Williams rated it it was amazing. Can't believe it's been 18 books already. That's an achievement right there, keeping these characters still engaging and entertaining.
Great stuff as always and I will continue to read every new novel in the series as they Can't believe it's been 18 books already.
Great stuff as always and I will continue to read every new novel in the series as they are published! Oct 03, Michael Gordon rated it it was amazing. Battles in the east The book starts with Cato and Macro based in Tarsus in the eastern provinces. Cato is given a mission to attempt to broker a peace with Parthia while Macro accompanies General Corbulo in a campaign to suppress an uprising.
For much of the book Cato and Macro have separate storylines as they pursue their missions. The two friends are reunited in the final section of the book as they overcome mutineers and rebels. This was the standard expected from Simon Scarrow. A well written Battles in the east The book starts with Cato and Macro based in Tarsus in the eastern provinces.
A well written book with two familiar characters and well described action. Another Brilliant read from Simon Scarrow! I just love these adventures with Cato and Macro! May 23, Bob rated it really liked it. Been reading this series since the first book. Overall the 18th entry is a good read. Introducing a basically new cast of characters after the fall of Claudius has been refreshing to the series. It been ramping up for the last two entires and it feels like Mr.
Scarrow is not quite sure where he wants t Been reading this series since the first book. Scarrow is not quite sure where he wants to go with this story arc. Looking forward to the next entry! Jun 06, Mr Roy Davidson rated it liked it.
It was an improvement on 17 and got better towards the end. But sadly Cato and Macro should be betting near the time where they are put out to pasture. Maybe Cato and Cassius?
Macro needs to be allowed to go to Londonium and live with his wife and mother and Cato needs to find a new companion. The good thing about this book was that it allowed for closure of Macro. The mutiny was a good twist and that Rome sometimes stutters before winning. Aug 07, Sean Loone rated it really liked it. It makes for an excellent historical read and it was a real pleasure revisiting old characters Macro and Cato. The back stories are good, the action well paced and the move in two different directions at the same time worked well.
Another page turning sword and sandals tale from Scarrow, this time with his 2 heroes separated for much of the book, which charts their parallel perils on the Parthian frontier. Cato's story in particular follows a similar narrative arc to some of Ballista's experiences years later in one of Harry Sidebottom's books.
It perhaps is all resolved in a bit of a hurry with a relatively obvious connection between the two narratives, but I will happily await the next installment. Sep 29, Jack Sakalauskas rated it it was amazing. For the most part it is two concurrent stories. The book seems to have taken on the appearance of a diary as far as the actions of Cato is concerned. Marco on the other hand has come more to the forefront, bringing out his finer points.
