Video games trying to properly re-create the dynamic of a game that relies so much on actual human interaction, face recognition and more will always have a lot of hurdles to get over -- but if you don't unfairly fault this game for not achieving the impossible, it's fun to focus on what it does pull off.
The single-player mode is a progression through hold'em tournaments around the world. You'll take command of a cartoonish character or your own Mii and visit high stakes games in tropical island casinos, exclusive clubs half a world away and Las Vegas itself. You'll face off against an array of virtual opponents, some of which are modeled after real-world poker players that you might have seen competing on TV before.
These high-profile opponents are given specific personalities that you'll have to overcome, like increased aggressiveness in betting. You'll have to hone your skills to beat them all and walk away with virtual millions. The multiplayer mode is online, through Nintendo's WiFi Connection.
And while many WiiWare games fail with WiFi because of a lack of opponents out there looking for games, Texas Hold'em Poker does pretty well for itself -- it's been a Top 20 download for two months, you know. A lot of people already own it, and a lot of people are online wanting to challenge you. The WiFi matches again let you use either a cartoon avatar or your own Mii character, and it's a casual affair -- perfectly matched with the laidback nature of the Wii's "expanded audience.
Again, this isn't real-world hold'em -- the bluffing component plays out differently, in a subdued way, and games aren't very intense. There will be players upset about how relaxed it all is, wanting an experience more similar to the high impact games available on different Internet poker sites, played for real money. Well, if you want that, go to those Internet sites.
Hold'em on WiiWare is different -- not better, not worse, just different. The package is rounded out by a "Quick Play" option that isn't all that quick, so it's safely ignored. But the overall presentation is nicely done -- you can tell a bit of extra effort went into it. The visuals are clean and attractive, the characters have personality.
The Mii support even goes the extra mile -- Gameloft threw in a couple of subtle details I've never seen anywhere else, before. For example, my Mii wears glasses. While sitting at the poker table, he'd occasionally reach up to adjust the glasses on his face -- Miis not wearing them wouldn't do that, though.
That kind of little extra just goes to show that the developers here weren't looking for a quick cash-in -- they really wanted to create a good, clean, fun poker experience specifically for the Wii. They did a pretty nice job. Verdict Gameloft's Texas Hold'em Poker isn't the new high-bar for poker simulation video games -- it doesn't overcome the natural hurdles of translating troublesomely human elements of the game like the subtleties of bluffing, table talk and the like.
